A hand fan bearing the Puerto Rican flag becomes the base for this work, overlaid with the word Colony—ornately displayed atop a symbol so often used for national pride and tourist appeal. Drawing on a series of catchy promotional phrases historically used to market Puerto Rico, the piece reflects on the island’s economic, ecological, and political fragility in the aftermath of Hurricane María. Through a deceptively delicate object, Colony critiques the commodification of identity and the ongoing tensions between visibility, exploitation, and survival under colonial frameworks.
