Wow! Du bist so Braun

The phrase “Wow! Du bist so braun” (“Wow! You are so brown”) reflects on perceptions of brownness between Germany and Puerto Rico. While in Germany it can carry racialized and exoticizing associations, in Puerto Rico tanned skin has also historically been associated with agricultural labor and class. The work explores how perceptions of skin color shift through migration, climate, and cultural context.
